Is the Lachlan Valley Cycle Trail better than Biking the Bland? I decided it was time to find out. Gooloogong was the perfect base to ride a loop that took in four sections of the LVCT. A shade over 200 km that took me through Eugowra, Canowindra, Cowra and back to Gooloogong.

The ride started in heavy fog as there had been rain overnight. I’m glad I had brought my light jacket, even though I didn’t think it would be needed. Note to self – always bring everything!

Gooloogong to Eugowra

40.5 km to Eugowra, a civilised distance, and good timing for a second coffee. As I rolled into town the fog had burnt off and the sun was shining. The coffee at Fat Parcel was excellent and the outdoor seating area lovely, very bike friendly.

Eugowra to Canowindra

52.5 km to Canowindra, what a hoot. Definitely my favourite section of the day. Lots of fast downhill sections and beautiful scenery. The trail takes you past the edge of Nangar National Park, this part is outstanding. I peddled the last few bitumen km fast into Canowindra when suddenly the route diverted me into a dirt track. A nice little unused track to sneak you into town. A neat surprise.

I had an early lunch at Rose and Garden Cafe and again, scored another good coffee.

Canowindra to Cowra

44.5km to Cowra. There was more climbing on this section and the wind had picked up now. I settled into the rhythm of endurance riding. I enjoyed the up and down that is in short supply in the Bland and the spectacular mountain views. I didn’t stop in Cowra as the clock was ticking. I grabbed a drink and was on my way.

Cowra to Gooloogong

65 km back to Gooloogong, this is the zig zag section. The route takes you through the Japanese Gardens, another nice touch. Garmin had a few senior moments with the trail using paths, however Organic Maps performed flawlessly. I highly recommend this free app. The route more than doubles the actual distance between the two towns as it seeks out the unpaved and quiet roads. The wind was fierce at this stage of the ride and I had to stop a couple of times to gather strength. I saw many interesting things and quite a variety of animals. After 11 hours in the saddle, I arrived back in Gooloogong.

I really enjoyed the terrain, the views and more up and down than the Bland has. Another bonus is the close proximity of the towns and the fact they have good food options. Now that I have sampled how good the Central West area is, I am keen to do more.

So, is the LVCT better than BTB? Perhaps, but you must be the judge of that. The major difference is that West Wyalong is the Central hub of the Bland and is the best option as a base for rides. Whereas on the LCVT trail you can ride from place to place and have good options for accommodation and food.

New cycling experiences are a buzz and the more you can fit into your life, the better.

Ride and share.
